After a lot of haggling, the transition of power in Afghanistan is being conducted by a 3-man council in close contact with the Taliban.

They are:

– Former President Hamid Karzai.

– Former warlord turned bomber of Kabul turned America’s Most Wanted Number Two (after Osama) turned Hezb-e Islami politico Gulbuddin Hekmatyar.

– Former Foreign Minister and chairman of a thing called High Council for National Reconciliation Abdullah Abdullah.

I know these three. Total opposites. But now involved in a totally Afghan thing: finding consensus.

Karzai is saying some pretty decent stuff:

” The Taliban have told me they have appointed people to focus on the security of the city, and I hope there will be further progress on this (…) Ashraf Ghani has deserted his job and gone. He has left the scene. To fill this vacuum, legitimacy needs to be brought back. Only through a legitimate body, the security of Kabul and the whole country can be tasked to suitable hands (…) The Taliban are dominating now and I hope the domination is strong and for the good of the Afghan nation.”

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan should be officially announced by mid-week.
