Michelle Obama Has Ties to Bernardine Dohrn

“Michelle Obama, Bernardine Dohrn, and Sidley & Austin [Ed Whelan]

A quick follow-up to Andy McCarthy’s intriguing and provocative essay exploring when and how Barack Obama and Bill Ayers really first met:

Michelle Obama joined Sidley & Austin as an associate in the fall of 1988. She had previously been a summer associate at Sidley & Austin—evidently in the summer of 1987.

According to Wikipedia, Bernardine Dohrn worked for Sidley & Austin from 1984 to 1988, while she unsuccessfully sought admission to the New York and Illinois bars. (According to Sidley’s managing partner, Dohrn didn’t get admitted to the bar because “She wouldn’t say she’s sorry” for her acts of domestic terrorism.) It appears that Dohrn first worked in Sidley’s New York office, and then in its Chicago office.

Did Michelle Obama and Bernardine Dohrn work together? Did they know each other at Sidley? When and how did they come to know each other?

I don’t mean to suggest by these questions that there’s any reason to conclude that Barack Obama and Bill Ayers met through their wives. As Andy suggests, it’s quite possible that they met earlier in New York. Another alternative, as Steve Diamond speculates, is that Obama and Ayers may have worked together during a battle over reform of Chicago’s public schools in 1987 and 1988 (before Barack met Michelle).

Michelle Obama Has Ties to Bernardine Dohrn

Bill Ayers’ wife, Bernardine Dohrn, and Michelle Obama both worked at the same law firm in Chicago, although Dohrn is barred from practicing law because of her criminal history. Pajamas Media does a shocking exposé of Dohrn, Ayers and their relationship with the Obamas. Contradicting the Obama campaign’s odd claim that Obama was eight years old during the bombings, this report points out that Ayers and Dohrn did not turn themselves in to authorities until 1980 and the Weather Underground group continued its bombing activity through the early 1980s. Obama was attending Columbia University in the early 1980s. From the link:

“For those of you unfamiliar with Dohrn and her special love of violence in the name of radicalism, one need look no further than her December 1969 rant celebrating the brutal Tate-LaBianca murders with the exhortation, ‘Dig it! First they killed those pigs and then they put a fork in their bellies. Wild!’ According to Discover the Networks, Dohrn had even less sympathy for those who were on the receiving end of the Weathermen’s violence: A Chicago district attorney named Richard Elrod was seriously injured in the Weatherman riot that erupted during the Chicago ‘Days of Rage’ in October 1969, and he was paralyzed for life as a result. Dohrn later led a celebration of Elrod’s paralysis by leading her comrades in a parody of a Bob Dylan song — ‘Lay, Elrod, Lay.’”

(1) What sort of man is it who four straight times…as chairman of Senate Judiciary… killed the “Born Alive” bill in the Illinois Senate…thus depriving babies born alive from botched abortions to receive nutrition and medical care? No other Democratic candidate for president has taken that position. The answer contrived by Obama’s Artful Dodger, David Axelrod, that the legislative bill was different from the one that passed the Congress later is a lie. Obama…and his wife…were willing to allow infanticide to exist so that “Roe v. Wade” would not be jeopardized. A shocking disregard for human life that cannot be contrasted by any other Democratic presidential nominee.

(2) What sort of man is it who sits in a church for 20 years while his pastor…his good friend…god damns the United States of America? And who then throws his pastor under the bus when it gets hot?

(3) What sort of man is it who buddies with an undisguised, unrepentant terrorist (who never apologized for bombing the Pentagon) and who used this association in the early days to advance himself by gaining a foundation chairmanship and other benefits-throwing Billy Ayres under the bus when it became advantageous…Axelrod, the Artful Dodger, declaring that Obama never knew of Ayres’ connection because Obama was 3 years old when Ayres bombed the Pentagon?

A Chicago district attorney named Richard Elrod was seriously injured in the Weatherman riot that erupted during the Chicago ‘Days of Rage’ in October 1969, and he was paralyzed for life as a result. Dohrn later led a celebration of Elrod’s paralysis by leading her comrades in a parody of a Bob Dylan song — ‘Lay, Elrod, Lay.’”

(Note: This just happens to be a cut from the first album I ever bought with my own money. You can imagine my disgust.)

After trying to stop Flanagan, Elrod lies on his back with a broken neck. Flanagan, on the ground to his right, would later be charged with attempted murder.

Elrod receives care where he fell. He would never fully recover from his injuries.

Elrod has not forgiven, but he’s not bitter: “I’ve got enough problems in life-and enough happiness,” he says.
