King of the Mambo

Dámaso Pérez Prado (December 11, 1916 in Cuba – September 14, 1989 in Mexico) was a Cuban bandleader and composer. He is commonly referred to as the “King of the Mambo“.

Famous pieces and hits

Pérez Prado is the composer of such famous pieces as “Mambo No. 5” (later a UK chart-topper for both Lou Bega in 1999 and animated character Bob the Builder in 2001) and “Mambo No. 8”. At the height of the mambo movement, in 1955, Pérez hit the American charts at number one with a cha-cha version of “Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White” (composed by French composer Louiguy). It held the spot for 10 consecutive weeks. Pérez had first covered this title for the movie Underwater! in 1954, where Jane Russell can be seen dancing to “Cherry Pink”. In 1958, one of Pérez’s own compositions, “Patricia“, became the last record to ascend to #1 on the Jockeys and Top 100 charts, both of which gave way the following week to the then newly introduced Billboard Hot 100 chart.

    Senate clears omnibus bill

    The decisive Senate vote came on a 62-35 roll call in which Democrats finally reached the 60-vote super majority threshold that had eluded them only last week. Eight Republicans joined in the motion to cut off debate, allowing Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to succeed even with three of his own Democrats defecting.

    Caught most in the middle are those Republicans historically allied with the Appropriations committees and with their own stake in earmarks for their home states. Sen. Arlen Specter is such a case. Yet as a senior member of the once-proud panel, he was very cautious even Tuesday about committing himself to the bill.

    Back home, he faces a potential challenge from the right in next year’s Republican primary, and supporting even his old committee can be politically dangerous. Taxpayers for Common Sense lists about $25.3 million in earmarks requested by Specter alone in the bill, but when asked Tuesday afternoon about his vote, the Pennsylvania Republican was still hesitant.

    “I want to see what the lineup is before I decide,” he told POLITICO.

    Hours late, Specter did, joining seven other Republicans in support of the bill:

    Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter
    Mississippi Sens. Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker;
    Alabama Sen. Richard Shelby;
    Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander;
    Missouri Sen. Kit Bond;
    Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski and
    Maine Sen. Olympia Snowe.

    The three Democrats opposing were:Sens. Evan Bayh of Indiana; Russ Feingold of Wisconsin and Claire McCaskill of Missouri.

    A lawyer lobbying the U.S. Justice Department and the U.S. Supreme Court for a review of Barack Obama’s qualifications to be president says a key conservative justice has hinted that another conservative justice has been voting against hearing the dispute.

    According to Orly Taitz, a California attorney working through her Defend Our Freedoms Foundation on several cases challenging Obama, said she was presented with an opportunity to ask a question of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia yesterday.

    The issue of Obama’s eligibility has been raised before the Supreme Court at least four times already but has yet to be given a single hearing
    . Cases have been brought by Taitz, Philip Berg, Cort Wrotnowski and Leo Donofrio.

    What you had said was the first thing I thought of when I heard the bad news.

    This is absurd!

    Senate Republicans are the only ones who have any power to stop Obama right now.

    We cannot afford to spend so much right now!

    And much of what is being spent is not targeted spending.

    It’s that simple.

    Just say no!

    If Reid hadn’t reached the magic number of 60 votes, what do you think would have happened?

    They would have compromised.

    I understand we have to spend, but we are spending too much and not wisely!

    Here are the eight unwise men and women:

    Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter
    Mississippi Sens. Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker;
    Alabama Sen. Richard Shelby;
    Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander;
    Missouri Sen. Kit Bond;
    Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski and
    Maine Sen. Olympia Snowe.

    BTW, Tenacity, I showed the video image of “Americans following Obama” to my husband this morning.

    And he said, “Send that to me.” which I did.

    Now it will be sent all over corporate America.

    He’s usually a very level-headed guy, but he just found out about Obama’s plan to cut deduction for mortgage interest.

    And he was livid!

    Said if Obama does that he’s going to have a revolution in the streets.

    Said he’d be right there with a shotgun in his hands.

    If you knew him, you’d know that’s just not him!

    This Obama is making us all crazy!

  27. rosettasister Says:

    BTW, the CBO has so far totally dissed me!

    I’ve just emailed the Congressional Budget Office.

    “Total Annual Deficit or Surplus As A Share of GDP”

    FY 2008 -3.2

    FY 2009 -8.3 (analysts at the Strategas Group estimate the deficit could hit nearly $2 trillion, or 13.5% of the U.S. economy)

    FY 2010 -4.9

    When will these numbers be officially revised?

    (Everytime Obama signs his name these numbers will get progressively worse, especially given the dismal 4th Quarter GDP which I believe will be reflected in FY 2009.)

    I recently posted an article from the Economist magazine which put the FY 2009 number at 12.0%

    Strategas Group says FY 2009 13.5%

    The number for FY 2008 was 3.2%!!!

    I know how Obama is playing this. He’s going to put the FY 2009 number squarely on Bush’s shoulders.

    The truth of the matter is Obama took an already bad situation and is making it much, much worse.

    And these 8 Senate Republicans are helping him do it.

    The cynic in me thinks it just may be possible Obama is doing this on purpose.

    Most Americans just don’t have a clue what any of this means and how unprecedented it is.

    And conservative commentators really aren’t helping much.

    Senate Approves $410 Billion Bill to Fund Federal Government

    Earmarks account for just 1 percent of the bill’s overall cost, but House Minority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) said they had become wrapped into the larger debate about the size of the federal government, along with concerns about the soaring deficit.

    Speaking to reporters, he tallied up $2 trillion in spending in five months, including the omnibus spending bill, the stimulus and the financial bailout, just as Obama’s advisers revealed deficit projections of $1.8 trillion, major banks and auto companies teetered on the brink, and the stock markets remained near historic lows despite yesterday’s rally.

    “We’re betting trillions of dollars that we’re doing the right thing. So far, the bet’s not paying off,” Boehner said.

    “Had it not been for the stimulus and the budget proposal, [the omnibus] might have been noncontroversial. . . . This little iceberg came along and caused them all sorts of problems.”

  31. rosettasister Says:

    Eight Republicans Vote for Pork-Laden Spending Bill; Three Democrats Vote No

    Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), an advocate for fiscal discipline, voted against the bill because it contained 9,287 earmarks totaling more than $13 billion.

    “Americans are suffering in this economy, but Washington appears to be recession-proof, with billions wasted on politicians’ pet projects,” said DeMint.

    He noted that the bill contains earmarks for tattoo removal, swine odor, midnight basketball, museums, bike paths, a “Totally Teen Zone,” and the controversial liberal advocacy group LaRaza.

    “Combined with the spending bills already passed last year, it will drive up the number of earmarks in Fiscal Year 2009 to a total of 11,914 at a cost of $28.9 billion,” DeMint said.

  32. rosettasister Says:

    Ed Morrissey has it just right:

    Congress gives federal government a big raise in economic crisis

    Who were the Republicans who voted for cloture, and against forcing changes in the bill to gain some sense of fiscal responsibility?

    • Lamar Alexander
    • Kit Bond
    • Thad Cochran
    • Lisa Murkowski
    • Richard Shelby
    • Olympia Snowe
    • Arlen Specter
    • Roger Wicker

    Had they upheld the filibuster and forced changes to the bill, Nancy Pelosi pledged to kill the bill entirely, returning spending to 2008 levels.

    In my mind, that’s a feature, not a bug.

    With American wealth disappearing in the Wall Street meltdown and our retirements deflating rapidly, the only entity not living within its means is the federal Leviathan.

    2008 levels were already too high, but they look positively parsimonious compared to the free-spending Democrats in charge of Congress, happily throwing away money that simply doesn’t exist.

    We should mention the Democrats who tried to join the revolt:

    • Evan Bayh
    • Russ Feingold
    • Claire McCaskill

    Too bad they arrived at the ramparts just in time to see eight Republicans throw in the towel.

    The Ostrich Effect:

    Putting Obama on the Couch

    5) Wishful Thinking — making decisions based on what you would like to happen.

    The Obama budget is based on an extremely optimistic forecast, that the economy will turn on a dime after the first quarter and grow at 3.5 percent or greater for the rest of the president’s term.

    If Obama’s right, then perhaps the economy can power through the heavy tax increases and Fed tightening that lie ahead and create vast tax revenues to pay for his green investments and healthcare reform.

    If not, we face wallet-draining deficits and a lengthy period of economic stagnation.

    Oath Keepers: Orders We Will Not Obey

    Below is our declaration of orders we will NOT obey because we will consider them unconstitutional (and thus unlawful) and immoral violations of the natural rights of the people.

    Such orders would be acts of war against the American people by their own government, and thus acts of treason. We will not make war against our own people.

    We will not commit treason. We will defend the Republic.

    There is at this time a debate within the ranks of the military regarding their oath.

    Some mistakenly believe they must follow any order the President issues.

    But many others do understand that their loyalty is to the Constitution and to the people, and understand what that means.

    The mission of Oath Keepers is to vastly increase their numbers.

    We are in a battle for the hearts and minds of our own troops.

    Help us win it.

    Scalia: You need 4 votes for Obama eligibility case

    Lawyer confronts justice about prez’s qualifications

    Posted: March 10, 2009

    Orly Taitz:

    She said, “I told Scalia that I was an attorney that filed Lightfoot v. Bowen that Chief Justice Roberts distributed for conference on Jan. 23 and now I represent nine state reps and 120 military officers, many of them high ranked, and I want to know if they will hear Quo Warranto and if they would hear it on original jurisdiction, if I bring Hawaii as an additional defendant to unseal the records and ascertain Obama’s legitimacy for presidency.”

    Taitz said she had some worries asking the question.

    “I have to say that I prepared myself to a lot of boo-ing, knowing that Los Angeles trial lawyers and entertainment elite are Obama’s stronghold, however there was no boo-ing, no negative remarks,” she said. “I actually could see a lot of approving nods, smiles, many gasped and listened intensely. I could tell, that even Obama’s strongest supporters wanted to know the answer.

    “Scalia stated that it would be heard if I can get four people to hear it. He repeated, you need four for the argument. I got a feeling that he was saying that one of these four that call themselves constitutionalists went to the other side,” Taitz said.

    “He did not say that it is a political question, he did not say that it is for the legislature to decide. For example, right after me another attorney has asked him about his case of taxing some Internet commerce and right away Scalia told him that he should address it with the legislature. He did not say it to me. He did not say that Quo Warranto is antiquated or not appropriate. No, just get four,” she said.

    She then bought Scalia’s book and waited in line to get it autographed.

    “I gave him the books to sign and asked, ‘Tell me what to do, what can I do, those soldiers [her plaintiffs] can be court-martialed for asking a legitimate question, who is the president, is he legitimate.’ He said, ‘Bring the case, I’ll hear it, I don’t know about others.'”

    Why are there still questions about qualifications?

    Arguments of president’s defenders never actually addressed eligibility

    Posted: March 10, 2009
    9:27 pm Eastern

    The one subject that has been avoided to date has been whether or not the president is, in fact, eligible.

    So far, there have been two definitive statements on the issue that have been made public, including one from an Obama campaign spokeswoman talking about the challenges who told WND, “All I can tell you is that it is just pure garbage.”

    The other is from Chiyome Fukino, the director of the Hawaiian Department of Health, who issued a statement, “I as Director of Health for the State of Hawaii, along with the Registrar of Vital Statistics who has statutory authority to oversee and maintain these type of vital records, have personally seen and verified that the Hawaii State Department of Health has Sen. Obama’s original birth certificate on record in accordance with state policies and procedures.”

    As with the court opinions, what is not said is significant. While the certificate on file is “in accordance with state policies and procedures,” there’s no affirmation that the document reflects a Hawaiian birth.

    Bloggers Bashing Martinez Over Obama Birth Certificate

    Florida Sen. Mel Martinez is being bashed on right-wing blogs because of his answer to a constituent who asked him about the persistent rumor that Barack Obama wasn’t born in America.

    Martinez’s response to the question, in the form of a letter, has been circulated since early December, but has recently blossomed in the echo chamber of the blog world. Posters have copied it from one blog to another in the last few days – WorldNetDaily,

    and more.

    Despite Obama’s published birth cetificate and well-documented personal history, some opponents have long contended, based on little if any evidence, that he was born in Kenya – or in some cases Indonesia – and therefore isn’t eligible under the Constitution to be president.

    According to the blog postings, a constituent asked Martinez about that. His response was that a court had dismissed a voter’s lawsuit on the issue, and that the Constitution provides no other enforcement mechanism except for vetting by the voters.

    In the letter he currently sends to constituents on the issue, provided by his office, Martinez states, “Courts have concluded that only ‘a candidate or his political party has standing to challenge the inclusion of an allegedly ineligible rival on the ballot.’ … Courts have further concluded that, short of a challenge by another candidate, it falls to the voters to decide whether a particular presidential candidate is qualified to hold office.”

    The bloggers say that’s not good enough.

    “Senator Mel Martinez has laid the vetting of President Obama’s citizenship on the people of the United States,” wrote a Rightpundit blogger. “Does Congress assume responsibility of anything?”

    Martinez’s office didn’t have any further comment on the blog attacks.

    It requires presidential candidates to submit a Birth Certificate to the Secretary of State, and says a certificate of live birth is not an adequate substitute.

    It also requires voters to show goverment Photo-ID at the polls, bans same-day registration, says the deadline for registering to vote will always be 4 weeks before an election, abolishes absentee voting unless the voter will be absent from the county or can establish illness, and says no one may be paid to register voters.

    2) Learn hypnotic techniques or get cupid to shoot your interviewer. Give them a blow job if necessary.
    3) Be a sycophant. Never miss an opportunity to flatter when self serving.
    4) Only admit a mistake when it makes you look humble and vulnerable. Never admit anything that is truly an error or willful sabotage.
    5) Accuse your opponents of what you are guilty of and goad them into showing their anger.

    Now that’s how to leap ahead.

    We don’t have a lot of time and need to get very well organized on the local levels. If you haven’t met your neighbors, there is no time like the present.

    (Almost) ALL of my neighbors VOTED for IT! (him, whatever)And you just know when shit hits the fan, they’ll be coming to MY house for cover. I’m thinking about getting razor wire…………sad, kind of a joke, but still really sad.
    I AM SO SICK OF TALKING ABOUT him. I am reminded of that Burger King commercial, when the kid burger says to the dad burger; “I wish I was never broiled”!
    Today? I seriously wish Barry was never broiled. Can you imagine, if only his own mother……nevermind.

    I know. Bad.

    That MSN article is proof that Ann Dunham is still alive because who would have written that but Obama’s Mama?

    Pat Dollard has an interesting, albeit lengthy, article up. I had to quit reading, go to the store for some Chai and am “going back in”.
    In case anyone wants to read along……
