Upstarts RocketShip Tours and XCOR Aerospace say that the price of their flights, slated to begin as soon as 2010, will be $95,000, about half that of the ones being offered by Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic, which also hopes to launch as early as 2010.

“Our goal is to make space travel accessible and affordable to those who aspire to experience the ultimate adventure, said Jules Klar, CEO and chairman of RocketShip in a statement.

First, what do you get for your $95,000 from RocketShip (which has signed up about 22 people so far)? It begins with a five-night stay at Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort and Spa in Arizona for training, medical screening, and other flight preparation (including some R&R), according to Klar.

When your flight date nears, the company will put you up for another three days in Southern California, near the takeoff site in Mojave. You’ll get a preflight refresher course and a final once over.

When the day for your hour-long odyssey arrives, you’ll don a pressurized spacesuit and helmet and climb into a two-seat space vehicle called Lynx (you get to fly shotgun with the pilot), which will take off “with a powerful ascent” reaching Mach 2 on its way to 200,000 feet, or nearly 40 miles up, according to the company.

That is a much higher than the cruising altitude of nearly 7 miles typically achieved by commercial airliners but a good bit shy of where space begins, generally agreed to be around 62 miles up.

By comparison, if you go with Virgin Galactic, the tab will be $200,000 — and at that price Virgin says on its website that it has signed up “around 250.”

There will be six passengers and two pilots on each two-and-a-half-hour flight, preceded by three days of preflight training and screening at Spaceport America, a publicly-funded project 45 miles south of Las Cruces that the state of New Mexico hopes will be completed in late 2010.

Groups will stay at a hotel that Virgin plans to build nearby, said Graham Whyte of Virtuoso Ltd., sales distributor for Virgin Galactic.

Instead of flying “direct” a mothership, which will launch from Spaceport, will take you to 50,000 feet and your space ship will separate and climb to a maximum altitude of at least 68 miles, according to the company. So unlike the RocketShip flight, you will actually go into space.

Perhaps the biggest difference between the two offerings seems to be that the Virgin folks plan to let passengers leave their seats for a bit to experience weightlessness, said Catherine R. Wygant of Hurley Travel Experts of Portland, an accredited space agent for Virgin.

If you fly RocketShip you get to experience significant G forces, wear cool gear, and get a great view of the geography of parts of the big blue marble, but you’re pretty much strapped in for the flight. No floating around the cabin.

This simmering dispute, occurring online and in e-mails coursing daily across the Internet, seems unlikely to evaporate any time soon.

MSNBC actually aired that video by Keyes.

Of course it was ridiculed, and the hosts took lots of pot shots at Keyes and right wingers. But hey, at this point, any exposure is better than none.

Obama was a Senator in the state of Illinois and in the U.S. Senate. He should have known that any bill voted into law that was purposely not allowed time for the Congressional elected leaders or the public to read before being signed into law is ILLEGAL. Americans would never even knowingly sign a blank check. And, with all the lawyers on Capital Hill and in this country, by now at least one of them should have gotten the ball rolling towards legally stopping Obama’s White House takeover in its tracks.

Another problem, as I see it, is that Barack Obama has demonstrated, in less than one short month of taking office, that he has no regard for either the U.S. Constitution or the Rule of Law, period. Generally, bills that are passed into law have a scheduled start time factored in on its face for usually 30 to 60 days or more AFTER signing instead of it immediately going into affect.

What’s more, Obama and his staff state they will write bills to make “retroactive” laws and penalties for any prior actions that they deem to have been illegal; and, thus, they are planning to usurp the Judicial authority, also.

The Democratic Party, under the leadership of Barack Obama, has crossed the line. America is not a nation of poor, helpless, hopeless, ignorant people, as Obama and his staff would suppose.

Americans will not stand still for Barack Obama and the Democratic Congress’s dead of night, secret wheeling and dealing to rob this nation blind and strip this nation of its long-held trustworthy leadership in the free world by sneaking through bills into law that have never been put through the appropriate committees and/or debated in the Congress—many of which are being planned to be passed by voice vote.

Want a gun in Illinois? Fine. Then you’ll be forced to carry an expensive, million dollar insurance policy to be “allowed” to observe your Second Amendment right. At least, that will be the law if lefty gun-banner Kenneth Dunkin has any say in the matter.

Dunkin (D, Chicago) has made this attempt to undermine the Second Amendment even worse than a mere “insurance” policy. He has also slipped into this unConstitutional morass a provision that says gun owners will be liable if their gun is used in a crime after it has been stolen from them. The bill also authorizes the State Police to confiscate the firearm owner’s ID (FOID) from any citizen that doesn’t comply with purchasing the hefty insurance policy.

Rep. Kenneth Dunkin’s bill seeks to amend the state’s Firearm Owners Identification Card Act to provides that any person who owns a firearm in the state maintain a $1 million or higher policy of liability insurance “specifically covering any damages resulting from negligent or willful acts involving the use of such firearm while it is owned by such person.”

A gun owner would be responsible after a firearm is lost or stolen until the loss or theft is reported to the police department or sheriff of the jurisdiction in which the owner resides.

Police would be empowered to pull the gun license of anyone who does not submit evidence of having the required insurance.

Now this stolen-yet-liable idea is one that the city of Philadelphia dealt with not long ago. It passed there so apparently it has given other cities the idea to pursue this back door demonization of gun owners.

Dunkin has introduced HB 687 in the State House in Springfield supposedly to assure that firearm owners are “legal” in the Land of Lincoln but as gun owners continue to point out legally owned guns are rarely connected to crimes of any kind.

Obviously, though, this has nothing at all to do with public safety, legality, or the Second Amendment. This is but one more backdoor attempt to make owning a gun so expensive, fraught with regulation and difficult that more and more people will simply give up their rights. It is a backdoor banning plain and simple.

  17. JAC Says:

Ok, ready to do some screaming now,…… BACKDOOR BANNING!!….
#&$^#% ,…. like the article said, legal guns are rarely involved in crimes…. This will take the guns out of responsible hands and keep them in the criminals.. it does nothing but violate our constitutional right.

Having a day, as Troy says, lets rumble..I feel like getting out some boxing gloves and knocking some sense into the clueless….

If this does turn ugly and we are pushed into a revolt…. Who will the mealy mouth libs hide behind?… Who’s house will they run too?…. Not a hard question…. they will go to a gun owners house to hide.

I think the GOP has lost it’s way. They are still playing by the old rules and do not know how to deal with this change. If they come on too strong then they are considered poor losers that are just trying to discredit the administration. I also think many can’t see the forest because of the trees. They are clueless of the big picture and think if the Dems do badly enough they will gain back control in 2010 and 2012.

The media is our enemy by not reporting the facts and spinning any out cry as a wing nut political stance. (We need to put serious thought in how to change that)

We are in a great uphill battle, but the cost of not fighting is too great. We need to unite and form a sold loud voice; one that can’t be ignored.

I am calling the main Library in Terre Haute for reserving their large conference room.. I might not have many choices of days available but i am taking a stand and at least getting a local meeting scheduled.
Each day that passes, more laws are being introduced that fringe on our rights.
Illinois right now has a law on the table to back door ban guns… by charging ridiculous “insurance” for gun owners. The children are running amuck and we need to get some control. Just look at what this administration has done in 30 days…… what will the next 30 to 60 days bring… Time is of the essance…. We can’t wait any longer.

budgy – I haven’t figured out how to create an account on FOX to leave a comment. If I could, it’d be something to the effect of “Why are you posting a story on 2/21 for a poll that was taken 5 weeks ago???

As stated in the story, ‘The poll was conducted online between January 12 and 19, 2009.’ Gimme a break! This was before Inauguration Day! This was before he ended the Hopey/Changey rhetoric and began the Gloom and Doom campaign. This was before he put a tax cheat in charge of the Treasury, and the biggest spending pay-to-play-break-the-taxpayers-back illegally signed bill in the history of the US.

The Comments on this story are very encouraging. I don’t know who they “polled” but I’m guessing the first question they were asked was, “Do you like Kool-Aid?”

The internet is abuzz with chatter about organizing protests around the country to put an end to this madness on Wall Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. But I’ve talked to many people out there who have never organized a protest, and so they don’t have a clue where to begin.

Here are 10 simple steps that you can follow to organize a protest in your own community. If you want more help, just send me an email at bsteinhauser@freedomworks.org and I’ll work with you one on one to help make your protest a success.

    1. Pick a location, date and time in your town. I’d suggest main street at an intersection with lots of traffic.

    2. Tell your friends, family, co-workers and everyone else you know about the protest. Build an rsvp email list so that you can provide quick updates if something changes. You should also create a facebook group so that the group can communicate with one another.

    3. Make 5-10 signs with legible slogans that send a clear message to the public and the media. Write in BIG LETTERS.

    4. Call your local talk radio hosts and ask them to announce the location, date and time on the air for a few days leading up to the protest. Send a letter to the editor of your local newspaper announcing the protest. Email the bloggers in your area and ask them to post a notice about the protest.

    5. Write a press release and email, mail and fax copies to the local tv stations, radio stations and newspapers. Call the reporters that cover local events or politics and leave messages on their voice mail.

    6. On the day of your protest, show up with your group, be loud, visible, happy and engage the public. Wave your signs, make lots of noise and move around to get attention. If reporters interview you, give them some good sound bytes for their stories. Stay on message and keep your answers short and coherent.

    7. Bring sign-in sheets to capture the names, emails and phone numbers of everyone who attends the protest and/or says that they support what you are doing. You will then have a big list of people that can plan the next, much bigger and louder, event. Also bring handouts with one page of quick facts about why you are protesting in the first place.

    8. Add your pictures, video and an after-action report to your facebook group, and send this stuff to the bloggers and reporters that you originally contacted. Ask them to post the photos, story and video.

    9. Thank everyone who attended via email and phone, and set up a meeting to plan your next event. Now you have a list of people in your community that can help make the next protest huge. Encourage everyone to commit to bring at least one friend to the next protest.

    10. Organize a carpool and go find a friend in your neighboring town or county and help them organize a protest there. You and your people are now veterans and should be able to keep the momentum going around your area.

Email me if you have any questions or want some ideas for signs. bsteinhauser@freedomworks.org
