“On Gaza, Sense and Centrism” By Eric Yoffie

American Muslims Rabbi

Rabbi Eric Yoffie, president of the Union for Reform Judaism, left, is hugged by Khurshid A. Qureshi, president of the Association of Muslim Scientists and Engineers.

Wars sicken me, even wars that I support. I support Israel’s offensive in Gaza, but watching it on TV — the images of bombed-out buildings, crying women and, inevitably, the bodies of innocent bystanders — is a painful experience.

… as long as the thugs of Hamas can act with impunity, no Israeli government of the right or the left will agree to a two-state solution or any other kind of peace. Doves take note: To be a dove of influence, you must be a realist, firm in your principles but shorn of all illusions.

As a reality check for my views, I did what I normally do in these circumstances: I checked with my closest Israeli friends, who are all left of center, haters of war and ferocious opponents of the West Bank settlement movement. In virtually every case, they saw the action in Gaza as tragic but necessary and were astounded by the opposition of American doves. “What did they think,” one of them asked me in bewilderment, “that we would just sit there forever while Hamas fired rockets into our cities?” And they pointed out that most politicians on the left support the offensive, as do more than 80% of all Israelis, according to polling data.

I have not seen any polls on the reactions of American Jews, but my own sense, supported by anecdotal evidence from the Reform movement, is that there is strong backing for Israel’s government. American Jews have a commonsense approach to these matters.

We are aware that American forces have gone halfway around the globe to engage in a war in Afghanistan against terrorists who once carried out an attack on American soil. We know that civilians have frequently died in that war because terrorists make a point of operating in civilian areas. We know too that this war has the support of our liberal president-elect.

So why, we ask, should Israel’s center-left government, after long periods of restraint and desperate efforts to renew the cease-fire, be expected to refrain from fighting terrorists that are regularly attacking from right across the border? And we are certain that if rockets were being launched from Canada into our own homes in Michigan or Maine, we would demand immediate action, and our government would quickly oblige.

American Jews see Israel’s Gaza offensive as a tragic necessity, unwelcome but inevitable, carried out by a reluctant Israeli government doing what it must to end rocket attacks against its citizenry. In short, American Jews are, as usual, sensible and centrist, and supporting Israel in her hour of need.

Rabbi Eric Yoffie is president of the Union for Reform Judaism.

Linda’s giving her view of things:

written by Linda Starr, January 03, 2009

I don’t know Ed Hale, so how could I posibly hate his guts, to quote your commnent below. I just know he is verbally abusive, a liar and a fraud. Whenever he doesn’t get his way he threatens people and abuses them. He is a con man who uses people’s desperation, grief, and anger to manipulate them into giving him money. And it’s always a $1,000 he has to raise. I don’t know why it’s always a $1000, but that is always the number he says he needs.

Ed Hale pulled the same thing previously and dragged Phil into his schemes by claiming he paid a $1,000.00 for three copies of Barry’s Kenyan Birth Certificate, that one was sent to Phil, one to him and another to someone else. Ed kept insisting he’d sent one to Phil and when Lisa posted on his blog that Phil didn’t get anything from him and to stop saying he’d sent one to Phil, Ed panicked, removed Lisa’s post and banned her. When Phil found out he called Ed in the wee hours of the morning and reamed him a good one. (That is why I said I wouldn’t want to be Allison when Phil found out what she was doing. I don’t ever want to be on the receiving end of one of Phil’s ream jobs when he’s mad!) then Ed really panicked as to how he was going to save face, so he concocted another wild story that simply was not true involving Phil again.

Ed started calling people right then and telling them phil was withdrawing the suit because Barry had Phil threatened and Phil was getting out! That went viral in a very short time and after a few hours, I had to step in and correct the lies spreading everywhere. It happened on the one day that Lisa had taken off since July. As it was, Phil also took off since Lisa wasn’t working that day. So, it fell to me to clean up the mess Ed was making. I told everyone that it wasn’t true and that Phil wouldn’t back down no matter what they threw at him.

I’ll tell you another thing Ed did that left me with a very bad taste in my mouth. Ed Hale told his listeners to send donations to him for Phil, instead of directing them to this site to donate directly. Then Ed Hale donated a
$1,000 to Phil, in his own name as if it was his donation, instead of reporting that it was the money he collected on Phil’s behalf. So Lisa or Phil have no way of knowing who to thank or give credit for their generous donation. Now, Phil or Lisa would never say that in public because it’s too close to an accusation, but I sure won’t hesitate to say what I think happened. Was it a good thing that Ed did to generate doantions for Phil’s case, yes. And it was generous as well. I certainly believe in giving credit when it is justified. I don’t believe anyone is all bad. And I think all people have shades of gray within them. I don’t think Ed is a bad man, but he lets his personal agenda cloud his judgment and actions. The truth is I haven’t much respect for Ed Hale because he’s a liar and has maniulated good sincere patriotic Americans for his own agenda. It disturbs me that perhaps he took some of the money intended for Phil’s case. Not that he didn’t have a right to get donations for his show, but that he didn’t tell people he was doing it that made it dishonest. You know, Phil & Lisa haven’t dipped into the money for the case that is donated. Everything they’ve used any of it for were expenses. Out of pocket expenses.

  5. j.b. Says:

Rose I listened to about an hour of Ed’s show (and I want my $, er, time back!) then switched to listen to Phil. I wish I could give you a synopsis……..I will say; that I did not hear anything I would consider “new”. I am still a believer in what Phil is doing and am very glad that ALL the naysayers have been proven
W R O N G ’til now. I am encouraged by his sticktuitiveness and I have the utmost respect for Phil and his team. I wish I could donate $10,000.00 to him (‘cuz I would), but I will give what I can.

I also think Ed Hale is a liar and will not support his site by even listening any longer. I look forward to Ed being held responsible for his own nefarious actions. But he prolly won’t, ‘cuz he don’t even know what nefarious means! 🙂

I listened to the first hour and Berg was still going strong. He was discussing the Hollister (interpleader) case.

MommaE sounded a little weak. She’s a real trooper!

And the other guest was the gentleman whose articles have been published by Pravda.

I definitely recommend listening, a lot of interesting callers. (link in comment above)

I was struck by one thing Berg stated.

He believes Obama will be blackmailed. In fact, Obama may be being blackmailed already.

One thing is for sure, this is not the Obama I knew during the campaign.

If Berg is right, and what Obama is hiding is forcing him to be more of a centrist, I’m actually okay with that.

    Serves him right!

Actually, I believe in both Phill and Ed.. Afterall, Ed did come up with that obama sr. divorce degree.. Berg is influenced by his knowledge. Ed is very emotional. However, they BOTH want the same results. NONE of us are perfect.

Well, next Friday is the big SCOTUS day for the Berg cert case. They may drive us nuts by not issuing a response until the next Monday, but what’s 2 more days.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say they’re going to get serious with this. I know I can wind up seriously humiliated but after reflecting on all of this, the only way they can’t deal with this is if they are totally incompetent.

Whether we like all of them or not (and I don’t like them all), these folks weren’t appointed like we elect everybody else. They had resumes a mile long that actually had to do with immense qualifications for the job. How they could sit idly by and let something like this knock a hole in our Constitution is unimaginable (but possible).

So I’m going to stretch my usual cynicism and say this it IT! As has already been posted, they may already have some serious documentation in hand and are waiting for the Congress to have their shot.

Otherwise, why the conference the next week on a stay application that will be moot by then? They are probably delighted that the MSM is not stoking the fires, or maybe more possibly, there is a background effort to keep the lid on this until the excrement really hits the fan.

There’s just too much smoke floating around here and the silence to the public may be very telling in itself. This has GOT to blow!

If I am wrong, I will be a whipped puppy for a while, but the struggle will have to go on. This country is far too important to me to let this happen unchallenged!

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States is working toward a cease-fire that will not allow Hamas to continue firing rockets into Israel, a State Department spokesman said after Israel launched a ground invasion of Gaza.

Spokesman Sean McCormack says it’s obvious the cease-fire should take place as soon as possible, but it has to be sustainable and cannot allow Hamas to continue to launch rockets out of Gaza.

The U.S. has asked the Israeli government to be mindful of potential consequences of its actions to civilians. He said Saturday that the U.S. is deeply concerned about the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

    Is Harry Reid a racist?
    Posted by hillbuzz

Things are getting more and more interesting in the drama to replace Obama in the Senate.

Apparently, Harry Reid’s on tape in conversations with Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich shortly before his arrest insisting no black replace Obama in the Senate. Reid wanted either Tammy Duckworth or Lisa Madigan, since Reid believed (correctly) that Jesse Jackson Jr., Emil Jones, Danny Davis, or other black politicians won’t be able to win election in their own right in 2010.

The other day when Congressman Bobby Rush whipped out the race card to pressure acceptance of Roland Burris as Obama’s Senate replacement, it seemed like Rush was just reading from the successful Obama playbook, and race-baiting without cause for political gain.

Now, it looks like Rush was really onto something, and Reid is doing everything he can to keep a black Senator off the table…because Reid wants to hold that seat in 2010 and does not believe a black Senator will hold it. Based purely on the color of that Senator’s skin.

Which makes Reid, in a sense, racist…and the parallel between him and George Wallace, as used by Rush, just got more credible. Threatening to bar Burris from the Senate with………

    One persons opinoin Excerpt>

Setting a date to discuss the injunction on preventing congress from counting the Electoral College’s votes isn’t a moot issue; in this context any judgement is retroactive! So that even if congress has counted the Electoral College’s votes and have declared Obama the presidential winner; if the Supreme Court finds Obama ineligible to be a presidential candidate, they can retroactively cancel the results of the January 8th Electoral College’s vote count!

And that’s why the Supreme Court is allowing for a January 16th conference on Berg’s injunction to stop congress from counting the Electoral College’s vote on January 8th. It’s not a moot issue, it’s a very deliberate political game of entrapment or as in chess it can be seen as a move of checkmate. Because the Supreme Court is basically giving Obama no wiggle room to manoeuvre and escape from the January 9th’s conference of Berg’s Writ of Certiorari. The Supreme Court is ultimately saying to Obama, if you don’t hand over your evidence to us on January 9th, you will be forced to hand over your evidence to us on January 16th, otherwise we’ll retroactively cancel the results from the Electoral College’s votes that were counted back on January 8th!

The Justices of the Supreme Court will read letters sent to them. Let them know how important it is for them to hear our case; how “standing” is important on the issue of Obama’s qualifications; how we are headed for a “Constitutional crisis” if Obama’s qualifications are not resolved; how important it is to follow “our Constitution;” and how Obama’s records: his original ‘vault’ birth certificate, immigration records when he as Barry Soetoro [adopted in Indonesia] returned to Hawaii in 1971, if any, and any change of name Court records are necessary as Obama might be an illegal alien, not only not qualified to be President, but a fraud as U.S. Senator from Illinois.

Write one [1] letter to the nine Justices of the United States Supreme Court (names are listed below), make nine [9] copies and put them in nine [9] separate envelopes, addressed to each Justice, and then place them into one [1] manila envelope and mail to:

  29. Foxtrot Says:

Hello all! I am only peeking in as I have a long drive home tomorrow. Just wanted to post this comment from Linda Starr. It is relevant because some of us feared that the “bombshell information” would not be revealed if they deny Berg’s case. Linda Starr puts that to rest with this comment. Also, I am dying to know what the “sealed case” is all about! Any ideas?
    Linda Starr said:
I will say that evidence for all 3 cases are all tied together in some ways. And that is also why we can’t reveal some evidence. By doing so we could jeopardize all three cases. I told you he’s got three legal actions going, one we can’t talk about because it’s under seal. The deadline on that one is tomorrow and then he can handle it, but the waiting period will be over so he can take action. I won’t be able to discuss what he is doing though until Phil okay’s it. I promised everyone from day one that Phil would do the right thing and fight until the truth was revealed, one way or another.

What I have found is that there are many things which can be done to help and people are doing them. Like writing snail mail letters to the SCOTUS to show them this issue is important to people, that we care whether or not the Constitution is upheld. I do believe we will prevail. People don’t understand why we don’t reveal all the evidence, but we can’t. I know many of you won’t understand, and sometimes it’s even hard for me to wait it out, even if it’s explained to me. I do understand how everyone feels. But I also know that you don’t want us to do anything that might hurt this case in any way, like ticking off the judge or SCOTUS by revealing evidence.

Trust me that WE, (Phil, Lisa or myself) won’t allow ANY evidence to be confidential indefinitely. You just have to trust us to do the right thing.

The other action, under court seal, has implications of a criminal prosecution. If Barry’s response to this secret action is to refuse to prove he has not been defrauding the government since becoming a US Senator (by not even being a citizen and eligible), he can be prosecuted by Phil instead of waiting for the DOJ to act. If we produce evidence in public now that becomes tainted because it was made public, then we lose. All of this is crucial how it is handled. Like I keep saying, Phil will leave no stone unturned. No avenue to victory will be ignored, if at all viable.

An attorney representing Burris is lobbying for Senate support, sending a letter to Senate Democratic leaders asking them to seat his client.

In the letter, dated Friday, attorney Timothy Wright called on the Senate leaders to grant the people of Illinois the representation the U.S. Constitution affords them.

Reid urged Blagojevich to appoint either Illinois Veterans Affairs chief Tammy Duckworth or Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Saturday, citing anonymous sources.

Reid reportedly opposed the appointments of Democratic Reps. Jesse Jackson Jr. and Danny Davis because the Democratic leader feared they would lose the seat to a Republican in the 2010 general election. Reid also allegedly opposed Emil Jones, the powerful black leader of the Illinois Senate, on the same grounds.

“What is clear to me is that every candidate that was African-American was denied and every other candidate was acceptable,” said Wright, adding, “I’m not going to read too much into that.”

Wright also echoed Blagojevich’s claim of a conflict of interest, saying that Reid’s call to the governor showed he had a political stake in who took Obama’s seat.

See below the statement my FNC colleague Major Garrett emailed me….it is from Majority Leader Reid at war with Gov Blago:

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the following statement today in response to reports that Gov. Blagojevich has been leaking and distorting conversations about the process for filling Illinois’ vacant Senate seat:

“Gov. Blagojevich appears to be trying to distract attention from his daunting legal problems and damaged credibility by distorting information about private phone calls between himself and other public officials. It is regrettable and reprehensible.

“Gov. Blagojevich’s efforts to try to tarnish others while the cloud of suspicion continues to grow over him are shameful, as are his efforts to further betray the public trust and sow seeds of division. As each day passes it becomes increasingly clear that Gov. Blagojevich is not fit to lead, and he should resign.

“I will not allow his corruption charges or his antics to distract me from leading the Senate, to drive a wedge in our party or to obscure the facts.”

Ahhahahahahahahaha-a Wedge? As if things are all hunky dorey in Demothugland!
I’ll give ya a wedge, Harry. A wedgie!

One more thing before I have to go again . . . everyone knows I am a loyal Democrat and have been my adult life. I have stated I am thoroughly disgusted by how the primaries were “prearranged” or “stolen” so Obama could win. I was also disgusted at the sexist way Hillary was treated throughout the primaries and how the MSM favored Obama in coverage. My anger at my own party has been public record for these past several months.

However, those of you who are Republicans should be even more upset at your party! Have you all contacted the RNC? The Republicans were extremely quiet during the entire campaign, even though they KNEW everything we know about Obama. They were contacted by all of us and they took no action. They are still sitting quietly while this horrible travesty is about to take place for our country. Where is the RNC’s guts? They have become a “non-entity”. It isn’t about waiting and watching the Democrats implode during this fiasco, it is about defending the Constitution—which they are not! They are just as culpable in all of this as the Democrats! I am disgusted. When will someone in Washington put ‘country first’? At this point, I won’t care what party does it—JUST DO SOMETHING!

SNIPPED from Citzenwells………………………………………………..a little more homework. It can’t hurt to try!

I spoke to Dr. Orly Taitz for some time this morning. She is an attorney,
a concerned American and the driving force behind several lawsuits in the US
Supreme Court and California Courts. Dr. Taitz came to this country from
Russia and she cares deeply about the US. She and I have both contacted
Patrick Fitzgerald’s office regarding Obama’s ties to corruption in
Chicago. Dr. Taitz is urging all to write President Bush to make Patrick
Fitzgerald a special prosecutor. Here is her request:

    “Saturday, January 3, 2009
Write to Pres Bush: “Appoint Patrick Fitzgerald a Special Prosecutor”
As of now the only person that is actively investigating New Chicago Mafia
is Patrick Fitzgerald. Keep in mind, God works in mysterious ways. Elliott
Ness didn’t get Capone and old Chicago Mafia on murder, he got them on tax

Unless things change, as of now, Fitzgerald is hard at work cleaning up new
Chicago mob and corruption. Obama might be forced to resign or will be
removed before his Natural Born status is adjudicated in courts. There is
more and more evidence coming and being evaluated on the issue of public
corruption, financial dealings, tax evasion. The investigation might last
past the 20th. Just to be on the safe side, please write to Pres. Bush,
asking him to appoint Patrick Fitzgerald a special prosecutor. That will
asure us that BO will not fire him come 20th. Of course the best assurance
is indictment before the 20th. Let’s work hard.

    Closing comments:

You and I know and do not believe that life is so dear and peace so sweet as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery. If nothing in life is worth dying for, when did this begin — just in the face of this enemy? Or should Moses have told the children of Israel to live in slavery under the pharaohs? Should Christ have refused the cross? Should the patriots at Concord Bridge have thrown down their guns and refused to fire the shot heard ’round the world? The martyrs of history were not fools, and our honored dead who gave their lives to stop the advance of the Nazis didn’t die in vain. Where, then, is the road to peace? Well it’s a simple answer after all.

You and I have the courage to say to our enemies, “There is a price we will not pay.” “There is a point beyond which they must not advance.” And this — this is the meaning in the phrase of Barry Goldwater’s “peace through strength.” Winston Churchill said, “The destiny of man is not measured by material computations. When great forces are on the move in the world, we learn we’re spirits — not animals.” And he said, “There’s something going on in time and space, and beyond time and space, which, whether we like it or not, spells duty.”

You and I have a rendezvous with destiny.

We’ll preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we’ll sentence them to take the last step into a thousand years of darkness.

We will keep in mind and remember that Barry Goldwater has faith in us. He has faith that you and I have the ability and the dignity and the right to make our own decisions and determine our own destiny.

    Thank you very much.

We can only blame ourselves if hundreds of millions of us stand by while a few hundred people in Washington DC sell our constitution and the heritage that our fathers have died for. I have been waiting for someone to either fix this or tell me what I need to do to fix this. The silence is deafening. It appears that I and others like me are the ones that need to fix this. Where do you stand?

Beautiful speech – that man had a way with words for sure. I am not a Republican and I was in elementary school when Regan was prez, but I have come to appreciate him.

I agree with the need to so SOMETHING Tenacity! I just don’t know what I or any of us can do other than what we have done. Any ideas?

  57. Tenacity Says:

Yes…what you are able and don’t quit. If all you can do is write letters, then write. If you are able to organize others, then lead. If you have ideas, share them. If you can afford to litigate, file suit or support an existing suit. Ultimately, if diplomatic avenues all fail, be prepared to do whatever is necessary including physical resistance. Being told we don’t have standing is completely and totally unacceptable and We The People must do anything and everything to save our country…our constitution, even if it means going against the establishment. Whatever, we do, it must be a collective effort. I’m not saying a majority, but enough people that we cannot be ignored or overrun. Change doesn’t come easy and big change is sometimes easier to accomplish than small change. We must not be afraid of friction. Friction is typically required to effect change. We are dealing with ruthless people who have deceived a significant percentage of the ignorant populace. They have shown a willingness to break the law in many ways to accomplish their goals. It will likely not be easy to overcome them. The courts, education systems, media, and national government are all either deceived or in the tank. If We The People are cowards or passive, we lose. Lead, follow or get out of the way. We must act decisively.

Morning all, This quote was in my positive thoughts this morning. Thought I would share.

Philip Berg Has A New Update – Globe Covering Case – Will They Cover CitizenWells’ Constitution Hall of Shame?
    January 3, 2009 by zachjonesishome

Philip Berg, Esq., has a new post up today talking about this weeks Globe Magazine covering the Obama Birth Certificate controversity.

01/03/2009: PRESS RELEASE – New Issue of GLOBE Magazine Highlights
Berg vs. Obama U.S. Supreme Court Case and you can Vote if “natural born” or not.

(Contact information and PDF at end)

(Lafayette Hill, PA – 01/03/09) – Philip J. Berg, Esquire, the Attorney who filed suit against Barack H. Obama challenging Senator Obama’s lack of “qualifications” to serve as President of the United States and his case, Berg vs. Obama, [is in the U.S. Supreme Court with two (2) Conferences scheduled on 1/09/09 & 1/16/09] announced today that the new issue of GLOBE Magazine [1/12/09 issue] highlights Berg vs. Obama U.S. Supreme Court case and is major story on the front of the magazine and is the centerfold story. There is a place for everyone to vote as to status of Obama, “natural born” or not.

Berg stated, “This is the 2nd time GLOBE Magazine has highlighted the question of Obama’s lack of ‘qualifications’ to be President. More and more people are aware of the fact that Obama does not meet the ‘qualifications’ and that this is the biggest ‘Hoax’ perpetrated on the citizens of the United States in 230 years. When the truth finally comes out, individuals including Barack Hussein Obama, Michelle Obama, Howard Dean [Chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC)], other top officials of the DNC and senior campaign staff of Obama’s campaign should be brought into the criminal justice system and indicted and tried with incarceration for those convicted.”

The story is the center spread. There’s also a poll where you can Cast Your Vote: Truth or Vicious Smear? Was Barack Obama actually born in Kenya and therefore not legally eligible to serve as President? Or are the mounting claims against him just part of a vicious smear campaign to discredit him? Here’s a chance for you to have your say!
